5 Affordable Valentine's Day Ideas | Love Languages Edition

COVID-19 affected the way we live, work, and play. Therefore, we had to celebrate special occasions a bit differently. Valentine's Day is no different. Seeing that this is the case, we are presented with the opportunity to celebrate the holiday using a bit of creativity and ingenuity. A fun and creative way to celebrate the month of love would be to incorporate the 5 Love Languages into doing so.

What are the 5 Love Languages?

The 5 Love Languages: How to Express Heartfelt Commitment to Your Mate (most commonly referred to as The 5 Love Languages) is a book by Dr. Gary Chapman that looks at how to best express your love and appreciation for your lover based on their love language.

The 5 Love Languages are:

  1. Words of Affirmation
  2. Gifts
  3. Acts of Service
  4. Quality Time
  5. Physical Touch

Let's take a look at 5 Affordable Valentine's Day Ideas based on the 5 Love Languages.

Words of Affirmation

Words of affirmation involves the use of verbal communication to express how much you care or feel about a person. Examples include saying, "Thank you for cleaning up the kitchen last night. I really appreciate it."

You can express your care and appreciation for your partner in different ways. This can be done by congratulating, or affirming your partner. The example stated above is a verbal expression of thanks.

Cost: Free.

Gifts

This love language involves the expression of love and affection towards one's partner via gift-giving. These gifts can be tangible (physical items you can see and touch) or intangible (something you cannot see and touch). An example of a tangible gift is presenting a card to your lover on Valentine's Day, whereas an example of an intangible gift is buying them an affordable ETF (exchange traded fund).

You can give your lover a gift that makes them feel loved, seen, and appreciated. Another example of a gift is gifting your partner a fully-paid online course they've been eyeing for a while. Online courses are quite affordable and massive open online course (MOOCs) providers usually run sales on their courses.

Cost: Varies.

Tip: If you're planning on buying your partner a gift that is affordable, consider setting a budget. You can set an amount beyond which you are unwilling to spend. This will help you rein in your spending.

Acts of Service

Acts of service involve "doing something that is kind or helpful for your partner." (1) This means doing something for your partner that could solve a particular problem for them.

This could be running a few errands for your partner who is incredibly busy meeting work deadlines at the moment. You have to be in tune with your partner and know them really well to do this.

Cost: Usually free, however the cost of fuel (to drive around) or energy (physical exertion) cannot be ignored.

Quality Time

Spending quality time with your partner means doing something you both like together, without any distractions. Examples include spending time at the museum together, seeing a play, or walking the dog. Just make sure you adhere to the COVID-19 regulations in your area when doing so.

You can spend quality time with your partner by regularly communicating with and carving out time to spend with them. This can be done via one-on-one conversations, Google calendar, etc.

Cost: Usually free, but if it involves an activity it may come at a fee.

Physical Touch

Physical touch involves expressions of love by touch. This can be expressed via hugs, hand-holding, kisses, and more. The great thing about physical touch? It's absolutely free!

Cost: Free

Closing

If you've been looking for a creative yet affordable way to celebrate your partner this Valentine's Day, think about incorporating the 5 Love Languages while doing so. It will be a new experience for you (if you haven't done it before) and it will show your partner that you pay attention their needs.
